Why don't you save the glaciers?

New ideas in the fight against climate change

A reportage by Anne Gabriel-Jürgens.

“Your glaciologist only understands problems, not solutions. Save the glaciers from melting! "

The glacier researcher Fritz Keller took this friendly provocation as an incentive. While searching for ideas for solving the problem, Keller stumbled upon two existing technologies: If one were to combine cable car technology and snow cannon technology, it would be possible to generate new snow over a wide area. In order to combat climate change, snow-making nozzles carried by steel ropes now hang over the Morteratsch Glacier. His hope is that the new strategy will prove its worth and that the melting of freshwater reservoirs can be slowed down in some places. To make people aware of his idea, Keller sometimes makes music at icy heights.
